Okay, my friends. I know some of you share my addiction to HGTV's design star. Here's your chance to be a "WhoCares Design Star!" Do you get your own show if you win? No. Do you get any prizes at all? No. But you DO get my gratitude.
The situation: I am currently stumped about how to (re)arrange a corner of my living room and I am turning to you all for your sage and creative input. The picture below shows (in all its lack of glory) the corner in question, as well as some of the raw materials you have to work with. The primary goal here is to make that desk work in the space. The bookshelf does NOT have to stay. Other furniture (that I'll thrift for) CAN be purchased (if it's cheap) so suggestions for other pieces that would make the space work are welcome.
Other materials at your design-star disposal: a number of wall hangings in various sizes from a framed poster of the _To Kill a Mockingbird_ cover to medium-sized framed items (maps, prints, etc.) to very small framed items.
Here's the pic of the space as it is now (I can't believe I'm posting it in its embarrassing state, but I'm counting on you all!). Thanks for any ideas you can toss my way!

i am no design star, i'll say that before anyone else has a chance to. :) but i believe in the power of someone else's eye to help with design conundrums. so what if we trade advice? we can discuss your corner, and then maybe you could give your opinion on some wallpaper swatches i'm considering?
I need to push stuff around to see what works. If you want me to-- I'll come over!
and Darb, I want to see your wallpaper. Fun!
ooh, wallpaper!
i had a corner like this in a house i rented once. it was problematic. honestly, i'd just pile bookcases & a comfy chair there, but you've already got that goin on in your office/sunroom.
what about a table filled with pictures, like darby has just inside her front door? i love that writing desk, though. maybe on the other wall? with a bunch of vintage pictures hung all around it?
OK, my first thought is to angle the desk in the corner and put a tall floor lamp behind it in the corner. (bring good ambient light to the corner/room). Being married to a man who is 6'4, if you are actually ever going to sit at the desk, you would have leg room to stretch out :-)
To the left, along the stairs, I would try to find a low-lying bench or trunk to make into a small seat/storage of some sort, or shoe cubbies/baskets and to the right, I would line the book cases and then hang an arrangement of frames with different mats.. kind of collage style (as is especially pottery-barn-trendy-right-now).
There is my long-winded two cents :-)
i like al's 2 cents. do that.
love the suggestions! thanks, friends! once it cools down a bit, i'm going to start lugging some furniture around. and antiquing for a bench. what i've always, always wanted under the stairs there is a little pew. like the very front row from a church that has pews on angles. wouldn't that be dreamy? but i'd settle for a bench if i could find one...
i'm all fired up! you all win design star badges!
the pew sounds cool. jaci white has a pew in her living room and it looks good. i also like alicia's floor lamp suggestion.
