Some of you might be interested...

On Tuesday June 2, 2009 at 7 p.m. Film Streams, in collaboration with Alegent Health, will present a special one-time screening of the new documentary FOOD FIGHT at Film Streams’ Ruth Sokolof Theater, 1340 Webster Street. Director Chris Taylor will be on hand to facilitate a post-show discussion.

A fascinating examination of the food we consume, FOOD FIGHT explores some of the disturbing ways in which U.S. agricultural policy developed over the course of the 20th century and how a counter-revolution in support of local, fresh and organic produce emerged.

itchy. rash. medicine.

ben has eczema. i'm so mad. he actually used his fork during dinner last night to itch his side. this morning he said, "itchy. rash. medicine" (all words he learned in the last week since the rash appeared). today we saw our beloved dr. loucks and she said, yep, looks like eczema. and prescribed a cream. so i'm wondering if any of you or members of your family have ever had it, and if you know any tricks to make it go away (foods to avoid, vitamins to take, other off-the-grid ideas).

stars of the lid

this is my favorite album to listen to while reading. the music seems to make any story come to life. love it.

ali = funny

i've been lucky enough to feast on ali's situational humor lately. these were real zingers within context, but i believe they stand alone too.

"that wasn't an insult, it was just an observation." - on an elder who felt insulted

"meanwhile, interest acruuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuues!" - on large student loans

ali, you're gonna have to remind me of number 3. :)

has anyone else caught any good quips lately?

Before Daphne Departs...

Let's have a breakfast! You know the routine. Here are the details.

When: Wednesday (5/27) from 7am onward
Where: Brooke's house (email me if you need directions)
Why: Because we like it.

Hope to see you then!

p.s. This post really, really wanted to be in Hindi. It kept translating itself, until I found the magic button that made it stop.

an idea for our whocares weekend

I was looking in the paper for things-to-do in Omaha this summer, and ran across this. Don't know if any of it interests any of our dear members, but perhaps it may, as it happens to occur during our little 'staycation' this year. Just throwing it out there, as it's all FREE. Click the title.

why mama needs her nap

at alicia's lovely breakfast, we were talking this morning about the effects of sleep deprivation (moms live with it, the government tortures with it) and when i came home and checked slate.com, lo and behold, there was an article about it.

many thanks

alicia, thanks for hosting this morning. it was delightful. friends, thanks for coming out. lovely to see you all. absent members, we missed you. here's to summer and reunion.

summer's treats

what a boon to get to end my semester with a visit to the easleys, complete with time for recording and camping. a dream. if you've never camped with caron before, i recommend it. here are a few visual highlights. and for audio highlights, click on the title. hope you like 'em. hope there's more to come. and by the way, in the tent picture, it was raining. and someone was supposed to be helping to put the rain cover over the tent. but instead was taking pictures. oops. i don't know anyone who would do that.

in the spirit of the raspberry starts...

...i've got two jalapeno pepper plants that need a home. any takers? will gladly deliver. or, they're sitting in my garden plot and can be picked up at any time.

green

is it just me or does who cares have a spring back in its step again? it was a hard, long winter in these parts. it's been good for the soul to see some green around here, the people wandering out of their dens, blinking at the sun.

darb and i were recapping our winter doldrums at the farmer's market and how happy we are for the new season. how about you?

raspberry starts

ali's stopping at my place tonight.  we have all sorts of plans: play music, gab, camp, gab, gab, gab, record music, gab.

anyone out there want a raspberry bush start?  dear cheryl gave me three stalks last year & this year, they have split and are plentiful.  you could have a well-traveled plant with a good history of generosity & love, delivered by ali.  you'd have a piece of cheryl, ali, & myself, in your backyard, front yard, or wherever.

I promise, no more RSVP posts (after this one...)

Folks, it is looking like we will be having our summer get-together in Omaha. We will be offering scholarships for the out-of-towners who would like to come (and hopefully it will be all of you!!!) If anyone is disappointed that we will not be leaving town, I just don't think we would have many people who would have been able to do that this year. We'll try again next year.

Brooke has generously offered her home as the location again and I'd like to host either a family-friendly lunch or dinner during the weekend, too. I think it might work well to form committees to plan different activities during the weekend. So, expect emails!

Here's what you need to RSVP to:

Which weekend?
June 19/20 (Father's day weekend)
or July 24/25

i looked in the mirror this morning

and this is what i saw.

am i really only half-way through this pregnancy???

cinco de mayo

it's cinco de mayo. i hope you're meeting with friends to celebrate.  i had one very memorable cinco de mayo in college, which involved playing a show at mcfoster's cafe, going to a celebration with my art class afterward, and ended by me running down jackson street with twenty other people at 1am after the cops showed up at my friend kaite's house.

anyhow, the nights are less eventful these days...but if kate ever gets out of work, we're heading for my favorite strip mall mexican place. it's fun to commemorate an unlikely victory...when the odds were stacked against a small army and yet they overcame an undefeated foe (los franceses). yes, of course, that's why we celebrate.

About the trip.

Because of a vacation with a dear friend and a busy summer schedule (I hope I'm representing you correctly, Alicia!) Alicia has decided she needs to pass the responsibilities of the annual WhoCares trip planning off to someone else. Plus, I think we'd all agree that she's earned a vacation.

Caron and I recently talked about the planned location of the trip and due to several expressed concerns about finances, we've decided it is probably best not to go ahead with a visit to Chicago. Next year is our group's 5 year anniversary and it seems fitting to celeberate that in a big way-- maybe next year is a great time for a Chi-town Who-rah.

Due to time constraints I'm thinking maybe that if we are to still go ahead with a trip this summer the name of the game might be Make It Simple. Shall we fall back to our 'ol stand-by at Mark and Bob's? Shall we meet near Iowa City for a night of camping? Shall we move it back to Omaha again? (certainly not wanting to estrange our Illinois members)

We're also having trouble with dates. Our beloved founder, Caron, is not able to be in attendance on the last weekend of July as we had planned. And, frankly, it is a bit difficult to find another weekend that will work well for everyone.

In response to all this, I'd like all interested parties to send me an email with the following info:

1. Shall we have a trip this summer?
2. Are you willing to plan?
3. Where shall we have it?
4. What are two dates that work for you?

Friends, thank you all so much.

deactivate

today we hosted our second annual garage sale.  it was so lovely to get rid of junk, make a coupla extra bucks, talk to friends, and enjoy two pots of coffee throughout the day.  i'm always amazed at the strange things people buy.

i decided to pull to the plug on my facebook account last week--too many weird glitches and then the wasting time factor and the my relationships are too intangible thoughts.  so i deactivated for a little while.  i tell ya what...the tension i feel with the immediacy that comes along with technology is great.  what to do about it? how to resolve my beef with virtual living?

They're making one of my favorite books into a movie!
