Caron,
Lindsay recommended the NetiPot to me. I picked up another version of it just called a Sinus Rinse. It is a bottle that you squirt water (with a saline solution in it) up into your nasal cavities. It is crazy to do. But it WORKS! You will love it. You can pick it up at Walgreens.
As far as preventing allergies. I've heard from several people that if you buy some locally) produced honey (honey where the bees use pollen from your area) and eat 1 T. a day that in a few weeks you'll have some relief. It works off the same theory as the allergy shots I took growing up-- that if you introduce a bit of the allergen your body builds up some resistance to it or something like that...
I hope these help. I hate breathing thru my nose.
If worse comes to worse, you could just run with the dorky open mouth thing and have Alicia teach you the Napoleon Dynamite song and dance. :)
i highly recommend the neti pot....only like cheryl said, the squeeze bottle version works better at unclogging things (more pressure). you can do it up to 2-3x a day as long as you like. takes only a few minutes. way cheaper than boxes of benadryl.
a couple of helpful hints: only use boiled or distilled water (regular tap stings! bad! trust me!), and don't do it right at bedtime. that stuff needs time to fully drain out. (i did this one and my eyes were so red when i woke up from that stuff settling into my tear ducts. ouch.)
it was a crazy morning but i made the trek into town for my sinus rinse. first, to target (no dice). then to the grocery (needed some food), and then tried to get the lady at the walgreen's drive-thru window to sell me the sinus rinse so i wouldn't have to go inside with the 3 kids. she was NOT intuitive.
anyhow, i did my first wash and am a bit less head-stuffy. now i just need a shower to make myself feel less grungy and VOILA! back to me-self.
also, what i meant to say...thanks for the tips!
Yeah - the rinse helps a lot...a least it gives some temporary relief...my doctor recommended a silver solution that is supposed to help keep it rinsed out and eliminates bacteria.
Ester - C - it helps a lot.
