aldi

i will briefly sing the praises of ALDI again. i haven't been able to plan our grocery shopping there since henry was born. it's a bit much to have all three kids at the grocery story. so we made monday nights "mama goes for groceries" night, with no kids. and let me tell you, friends, this family of five got our week's groceries for $38. i even purchased some pre-sliced stir-fry veggies & splurged on some special purchase chicken.

warning: once you shop at ALDI & are convinced of the savings you receive, you may experience guilt when shopping elsewhere.

$38-- that's amazing. What are you guys eating-- oatmeal??? Oatmeal with chicken and Oatmeal with pre-sliced stir-fry veggies. And for dessert, oatmeal with chocolate syrup.

(My sister-in-law shops at one, too-- she also testifies of their greatness-- and they don't eat only oatmeal...)

Me again. Just wanted to chime in on the amazing amount of money you CAN spend on groceries. We do some of our shopping at Whole Foods-- but let me tell you, to afford it we buy mostly the store brand stuff. Every time I am there I am astounded at the amount of money people spend on food. The family behind me (mom and dad with two kids our ages) were buying what looked like their next morning's breakfast-- specialty chocolate croissants (about $8) two bottles of imported water (which I love, but runs almost $2 a bottle), organic berries for nearly $6 a package and a few other things-- nearly racking up a bill close to Caron's weekly budget. Yikes.

holy cow! i love Whole Foods, but i doubt i'll ever be able to spend my whole grocery budget there. (it is fun to go on Saturdays and get samples, though! hee hee!) i'd love to be able to get stuff there from time to time....like cheese, special meat (although i do love Wohlners for some good steaks!), fresh stuff. sigh!

caron, post your menu for the week. i gotta know what you are eating for $38! that is so tempting!

i love specialty grocery shops & little market buys. i love browsing. i think whole foods is really romantic.

as i've said before, i don't have too many picky things about foods..mostly because i just don't. it's not because i don't know the principles behind buying organic or only free-range chicken or whatever. i just have no particular drive to make the switch. you can only have so many things to be passionate about. and i think this is why i'm so blase: because i really can't shop there. the family is getting bigger. they need more food. ah, trying to explain this on blog comment: dumb.

for lindsay: our menu:

monday: tilapia, mixed veggies, & grilled pita w/ olive oil & oregano
tuesday: quesadillas
wednesday: stiry fry with chicken
thursday: turkey meatloaf w/ green beans & apple slices
friday: turkey burgers, sweet corn, potato wedges
weekends: varies.

the quesadillas are made in a skillet w/ refried beans, tomatoes, cheese, onions if we have them, & served with sauce, salsa, & sour cream. our kids love cheese quesadillas. sometimes.

the stir fry veggies were a special purchase at ALDI...tons of veggies for 2.59!!

you have to know all of this planning is a HUGE stretch for me. it is my conscience/responsibility to keep our accounts in the PLUS taht drives me because i'm way too free-spirited for all of this.

when i go to ALDI, i pretend i'm in communist germany. it's fun then.

oh, and we used to have a breakfast dinner one night/week...but in the summer i don't really feel like standing at the stove making pancakes.

but eggs, english muffins, & bacon are a good one (with the bacon being made under the broiler)

sorry caron, i can't let that one comment go. (i despise grocery shopping. all the numbers/products get jumbled in my head!) now how is it that pretending you are in communist germany makes shopping at aldi's fun? this is one i HAVE to hear! m

excuse: i mean SOCIALIST germany.

actually, i pretend i'm in that movie "goodbye, lenin". have you seen that one? anyhow, the grocery store scenes remind me of ALDI.

(ps: i watched this movie while hanging out with linus one afternoon. he & annabelle were 'sposed to be napping, but i think he wanted to be awake playing with toys...they were little then. maybe 8 months or a year. wow)
