so i was doing a little research on chimney rock, because i feel like since it's sort of the symbol of nebraska, i should know something about it. so i was looking at the nebraska tourism website and found this quote:

"According to early fur traders, Native Americans named the rock 'Elk Penis' after the penis of the adult male elk."

oh? is that why?

has anyone been there? i sort of want to go. it's 7 hours away. hm...

Ha! You guys are funny. I don't think I've ever heard "road trip to the elk penis" uttered before. I'd love to see an on-line journal of this trip...

I agree with Cheryl... an on-line journaled road-trip to the Elk Penis and back, complimented by Daphne photography, would certainly be something grand and worth waiting for.

Daphne,
Nate just had a thought... maybe you could position Ali "just so" in forced perspective and take a photo of her "holding" this grand monument to our state... or Ali could take the photo of you, or whomever could photograph any other random person that is a part of the expedition. (and I repeat, this is Nate's idea.)

hehe. that sounds EXACTLY like a nate-idea! we will be sure to try this experiment should we go. forced perspectie. ha

i'm game. we can take that picture. i'm sort of getting my heart set on this thing, now. we need to talk about when we can take this pilgrimage. i think we'd have to get a hotel room. 14 hours is a lot to drive in one day. i guess we could do it. but we could check into prices for a room and take it more leisurely. it would be fun...maybe there would be a pool. caron always mentions whether or not there will be a pool at any potential hotel where she's staying. pools ARE important

Cheryl, while you are out at Chimney Rock would you findout the actually indian name, not the english translation. And you have to realize that I think a lighting strike in the 1930's (or ?) knocked off 30 ft, so it's shorter than what the indians first saw.
